Photonwerk was founded in 2006 and acquired by Terravek in 2016. The optics bench in München has therefore been designing hyperspectral instruments for twenty years, under two owners.
What changed after acquisition: scale, and the discipline of designing for a product line rather than for a contract. Photonwerk built excellent bespoke instruments. Terravek needed instruments that could be built repeatably, characterised consistently and supported for a decade. That transition took three years and was not comfortable for anyone.
What deliberately did not change: the measurement culture. Photonwerk's founding principle was that an instrument's specification is what you have measured, not what you have modelled. Every unit that leaves München has an individual characterisation, not a type-approval by sampling.
The building is still called Photonwerk Haus and it is still on the street signage. That was a deliberate decision by Saskia in 2016 and I think it is the reason most of the original team is still here.
The PW-940 is in environmental test now. It is the first instrument designed entirely under Terravek ownership and it is recognisably a Photonwerk design.
