Why Terravek exists, in the terms we actually use internally.
To make Earth observation measurable, so that the people responsible for infrastructure, land and water can act on it with the confidence a measurement deserves — and no more.
The problem we work on
There is a great deal of Earth observation data and very little Earth observation measurement. The difference matters. A satellite image is a record of photons; a measurement is a statement about the world with a known uncertainty attached. Most of the value in this industry is lost in the gap between the two.
An asset manager deciding where to send a maintenance crew, a duty officer deciding whether to escalate a surge warning, a cooperative deciding how much nitrogen to apply — each is making a decision with consequences, and each needs to know not just what the data says but how much to trust it.
What follows from that
Three commitments follow, and they are the ones we are actually stubborn about.
1. Every product carries its uncertainty
Every ORBIS delivery includes an ISO 19157 quality report: measured positional uncertainty, radiometric uncertainty, coverage completeness and the lineage of every input. Not modelled from the sensor specification — measured against control. Where a delivery falls below a customer's contracted threshold, the platform holds it rather than shipping it quietly.
2. We do not interpolate over what we did not observe
A cloud-free mosaic that looks seamless because someone filled in the gaps is a picture, not a measurement. Terravek delivers the gap and says it is a gap. This costs us the occasional first impression and has never once cost us a customer who understood what they were comparing.
3. We publish what does not work
Every model ships with a model card documenting its failure modes and the conditions under which it should not be used. Every incident with customer impact gets a published post-incident review. Our validation results are published whether or not they flatter us. We have written about what this costs.
What we are not
We are not a satellite operator — we do not own or launch spacecraft. We are not a defence contractor, and our dual-use policy is a real constraint rather than a statement of preference. We are not the cheapest option in any market we compete in, and we do not try to be.
